Car Raid

Car Raid

Cecily Real’s Ford Taurus might appear small, but inside contains a total of twenty three textbooks for her nursing school in college.

“We were lugging all my college stuff home, and I didn't want to put them in a box, because I’d break the box…” Real laughed. “It’d get so heavy that we wouldn't be able to carry it, so my family and I had a brilliant idea to just shove them in my car and then get them out later. It took like four trips.”

Cecily Real just finished her third year of college at Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas. Although majoring in nursing excites her, the amount of money textbooks cost lays a huge burden on this college student.

“Textbooks costs upwards of four hundred dollars per semester,” Real said. “Good thing I have a scholarship that I use to pay for that. It literally costs a whole month’s rent, so I don’t like that. Not to mention it breaks my back when I carry all of them to class.”

However, the textbooks aren’t necessarily used solely for studying purposes.

“I use the books in other ways, such as holding down glue,” Real said. “I know my friends made a TV stand out of their books. They’re a great thing to clutter your desk with, to break your back with, and they make you go crazy. They're the reason the library is my best friend and my second home.”

Despite the strain textbooks place on college students, being able to become a nursing major has helped to ease Real by motivating her to work for what she wants.

“There's this really cool hospital in Austin, the Lakeway Regional Medical Center, that’s just been built, and it'd be wonderful to work there,” Real said. “I have no idea what kind of nurse I’d want to be yet, but this semester in clinicals I'll be doing my emergency room ER care, my ICU, which is the most critical patients, I’ll be doing labor and delivery, and also pediatric care. Hopefully I’ll know what I want to do after that.”

Being one of the few students to get into nursing school, Real tries to determine which qualities helped her make it into this program along with her knowledge of the subject.

“I have a lot of sympathy; that’s why I cry when patients die. But empathy is what nurses have, that should have, and I have that. You share feelings that they have, which makes you care for them better. When I see someone hurt, I want to be the reason they stay alive.”

Short Answer:

Although I'd love to go to both, I'd rather go to Harry Potter World because I grew up reading the books, and now that I'm rereading them, it rekindles these emotional attachments I have to the books. There's so much competition between the two because there are new upgrades that attract more people, and I feel that because both are so popular, the competition stays so high. It's hard to choose one disney character that I like the most, but I think I'd have to say Rapunzel & Flynn (the movie as a whole is my favorite). Tangled is by far my favorite movie, and Rapunzel has this energetic drive that keeps me engaged in the movie. I love the relationship between Flynn and Rapunzel because it's such an innocent love and I have to admit, they look really cute together. Rapunzel's singing voice is also so powerful, yet soothing. The songs are absolutely incredible, and not to mention her hair is amazing. I definitely belong in the Hufflepuff house, one reason being that I took the test on Pottermore and got placed there. Haha, but more in depth, I share this friendly personality that the characters in Hufflepuff all possess, and I also come off as a shy, more introverted person in certain situations. I am extremely loyal, which are all traits I would qualify for in this house.

Final Exam Planning

1. I'm going to shoot my movie this friday or saturday.
2. I will shoot in my backyard.
3. I will be talking about this book I've been painting in, and incorporate a story/poem about creativity and inspiration.
4. I will use a DSLR family camera and our tripod. I will also need my painting book, as well as paint and other objects I can find around my house.
5. So far, I'm planning on making a video in the beginning and end, with the title overlaying part of the video. I will incorporate a stop motion effect in the photos, so there will be a bunch of photos in the middle part. I will put my voice overs while the pictures are cycling through, and have quiet music playing in the background.

HDR Photography Intro

1. The manipulations you need to make to create an HDR image is a variation of shutter speed and aperture.
2. The equipment you need is a camera (preferably with an AEB function), tripod, and an HDR photo-blending program.
3. Someone might take an HDR image to capture both ends of the light spectrum in order to show a true visual representation of a scene.
4. With HDR images, you will be able to see more detail and a wider range of light intake, meaning that things that used to be too light or too dark will all be visible in that single photo.

Short Answer:

I have not used Uber or Lyft to get places, but my family members and friends have, and they tell me all the great things about the services. I think this is a super convenient and reliable source of transportation, and one of my friends told me about her experiences. She was unable to get a ride home, so she called in an Uber, and got home safely. She said the driver was really nice, and she didn't feel in danger or awkward during the ride. I feel like ride sharing is extremely helpful and should be used more in the future. It reduces traffic, and can hopefully prevent accidents or other backups. For example, if a person got drunk and didn't feel safe driving home, calling an Uber or Lyft would be the safe route out of the situation. I feel that ride sharing is a lot safer than a regular taxi service because the rider can examine and check out the driver before getting in the car, which can reassure the rider that they are in safe hands. It also puts aside the problem of getting in a taxi, getting to your destination, and forgetting money. With these ride sharing services, that is taken care of before getting in the car. I definitely think that the two services/companies should have the same safety precautions. Any rider should feel safe and at ease when getting in a car with a driver/stranger, and although being involved with the city may irk Uber or Lyft, I think if it ensures extra safety for the rider, that it may be necessary.

Movie Review

SEAing high reviews for 'Captain Phillips'

On the American Cargo ship Maersk Alabama, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks) left his family to deliver supplies to needy countries in Africa. Taking extra precaution around the borders of Africa, Phillips and First Officer Shane Murphy (Michael Chernus) order safety checks, only to encounter armed Somali pirates who manage to hijack the cargo ship. While searching the ship, Somali pirates Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), Adan Bilal (Barkhad Abdirahman), Nour Najee (Faysal Ahmed), and Walid Elmi (Mahat M. Ali) take Phillips hostage and demand a large ransom. However, as the money is collected and the pirates board an emergency lifeboat, they don't release the captain, and Phillips gets taken with them. Both the crew members and Navy SEAL then have to work to rescue their captain and do whatever it takes to keep him alive. The determination and persistence brought out through the characters' actions supplied a prominent theme in this film. All while Phillips was held hostage by the Somali pirates, the crew and Navy SEAL never stopped trying to bring him to safety.

Because this movie is a retelling of a true story, I feel that this movie appeals to many audiences. Those who lean towards action and suspense will definitely be interested, but those that aren't as big into the action portion can still enjoy this captain's fascinating story. This movie does contain scenes with abuse and violence, which might not be appropriate for younger generations, but in my opinion, there is no set age limit.

Overall, Captain Phillips was a very well constructed film that was able to hold a suspenseful factor as the plot progressed. As a viewer, I was constantly on edge, wondering the outcome of this uncanny situation. Although the introduction was a bit slow, the series of events quickly picked up speed, beginning when the Alabama first spotted the Somali boats trailing after them. Aside what was shown in the film, the ensemble effort and production of this film is extraordinary. The director, Paul Greengrass, kept the film rolling for many minutes on end, which proved an exponential strength of character for both the actors and filmmakers. As this story is based on true events, Greengrass did an incredible job at capturing all aspects of this story. This movie shows a new level of remarkable abilities with its use of real equipment instead of fake props, which are unable to capture the full essence of the story. For that reason, this film went above and beyond to draw the audience in and provide a true retelling of this astounding event. I would rate Captain Phillips an 8 out of 10, for it fully encompasses the captain's story and provides a new sense of action and suspense that leaves the audience at the edge of their seats.

Movie Review Homework

Disney’s new take on The Jungle Book is gorgeous but under-conceived

1. The AV Club
2. Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
3. I'd rate the movie review an 8/10.
4. The review really stresses how good the filming and screenplay is, from the realism of the animals to the talent of the scenes.
5. Although this movie is very good, the review criticizes how the film doesn't contain any of its own elements. The movie is simply a remake of the old film, making it less original.
6. "...there are no moments of weightless perspective; perhaps what makes The Jungle Book so convincing—so effective as simulation—is that the camera never defies an audience’s expectations of how a real camera moves, even though it’s not always a real camera, or how real animals look, and even though there are no real animals."

1. The AV club
2. Jesse Hassenger
3. I'd say the movie was rated a 6 or 7 out of 10.
4. The author of this article claims, as I haven't personally seen the movie, that it had better pacing, livelier characters, and special effects than its previous films.
5. Some low points that the author expresses are that the movie feels old-fashioned, and that the actors could have been better.
6. "It’s inarguably a waste of time; both its stars and its audience probably deserve better. But sometimes wasting time can be fun in the right company."

Movie Review Prep

1. The main character's I'd expect to see are Richard (Captain) Phillips, Mike Perry, the four main Somali pirates.
2.    I predict that this movie will be action packed and at sea. Captain Phillips' ship was warned to keep  their ships away from the coast, but when the ship was too close to a port, four Somali pirates boarded the ship. As the pirates made their way around the boat, the ship crew took shelter in different rooms and attempted to get the pirates off of their boat.
Eventually, the pirates were captured  and sent to be released, but after the boat refused to start, Captain Phillips was taken with the pirates. As Phillips continued to be held hostage, the Navy SEAL and other services attempted to rescue their Captain, as his life was in danger. Eventually, the pirates were killed, and one was sentenced to 30+ years in prison, and Captain Phillips was rescued.
3. This story is important because it shows that the unexpected can happen at any time, and a person needs to be prepared for it. Captain Phillips even reflected how "in that area of the world, any blip on your radar is of concern. I always told my crew it was a matter of when, not if."
4. The pirates tried to take the ship because there was an immense load of cargo boarded on the ship (5,000 metric tons of relief supplies to be exact).

1. The most important actors in the film are Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Michael Chernus, David Warshofsky, and Yul Vasquez.
2. This movie has an average rating of 8.3 out of 10.
3. Paul Greengrass directed this movie.
4. This movie was produced by Scott Rudin,  Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca.
5. This movie won Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Barkhad Abdi), Best Edited Feature Film - Dramatic, Top Ten Films of the Year, Outstanding Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi), Outstanding Breakthrough Performance - Male (Barkhad Abdi), Supporting Actor of the Year (Barkhad Abdi), Best Sound Editing, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
6. This movie cost $55 million.
7. ??
8. Rotten Tomatoes said that the movie was "smart, powerfully acted, and incredibly intense, Captain Phillips offers filmgoers a Hollywood biopic done right—and offers Tom Hanks a showcase for yet another brilliant performance", as well as "fresh" and rated an 83/100 on the Metacritic site.

iMovie Project Questions

1.  On the websites I viewed, I learned about the basic functions of iMovie ranging from simply importing video footage to adding cool effects and titles. As explained, these functions will serve as the baseline to creating any unique video I come up with. There are different sections in the iMovie program. These include the timeline, clipboard, and video screen.
There are also many different buttons and controls on the iMovie software that can change the view options. These can change how you view the timeline or edit modes. When publishing, you are taught how to change the format of the video to make it accessible on many players.
2. I already knew how to import and add videos to the timeline in order to edit.
3. One thing that I didn't know before but know now is that there's a button to change the way you view clips. I didn't know that you could change the timeline from entire clips to how long they are.
4. With this final project, I'm mostly concerned with finding a topic that will work for me. Also with the topic, I think a struggle could be finding time to shoot. Once I get the base idea and coverage, the editing should come very easy.
5. I am confident that I can complete the editing in good time. I am familiar with the iMovie software, and I feel I can get plentiful coverage to use.
6. I might do a project revolving around paining or adventurous things, but I need to think about it a lot.

Short Answers:

When I heard about this story, I was appalled. How could people know about this lead contamination,  and instead of fixing the issue with some expenses, simply cover it up? Who does that? I heard about this incident in my geography class earlier this year when we watched a video regarding it, so I already know about it. The video showed a new aspect of the situation by helping me see the water after it was affected, which made the problem seem worse. I think that the people who knew about the contamination should definitely be fined, or punished of some sort. They shouldn't be able to poison people, knowing that they're doing so, and get away without punishment. I think that's just wrong on so many levels. Since children were affected, I think the consequence should be stronger as well. In my opinion, everyone involved in the incident should be punished, title or not. If the governor or other high-title people knew about the situation, that's almost worse, because they have the power to change the situation for the better. For them not to do that definitely deserves a consequence.

Free Write

Prompt 17 -

I thought today was going to be like any other. Man, was I wrong.
I trudged home from a long day of work, my shift ending only a few minutes ago. My backpack grew heavy on my shoulders and my eyes stung from staring at a computer screen all day. I couldn't wait until I was able to quit my job and move to a new city, away from the people and the stress. As I neared my ever so welcoming home, my eye was caught on a shadow across the street. The human-like shadow darted to the left, deeper into the alley. I know I should have just gone inside, but my curiosity got the best of me. Making my way across the barren street, I peered into the midst of the alley, looking for any sign of movement. Nothing. Shrugging, I turned as to head back to my house. All of the sudden, a cool breeze came from behind me that sent shivers down my spine. Something was behind me.
Then everything went black.
 -- Beep! Beep! Beep! --
I woke to the familiar sound of my alarm clock. Throwing my arm over to where my clock stood, I went through my usual routine; snoozing until my mother pounded on the door and insisted I get up, or be late for school. However, when I cast my arm toward my nightstand, I found only air. That's weird. With sleep still lingering, I opened my eyes. Instantly, I sat up, my mind suddenly alert. This wasn't my room. This wasn't my furniture, or even my alarm clock. Sh*t, where is that thing? After searching for what seemed like hours trying to find that piercing noise, I spotted it perched on a dresser. Figures. With the new silence that filled the room, my mind tried to process what the hell was going on. I made my way to the door, and opening it, I found myself in a house - my house - but with new furniture. I raced to the front door, eager to find something, anything, familiar. Nothing. As I made my way outside, I darted to my neighbor's house where I had spent countless hours with my best friend. Impatiently ringing the doorbell, the door finally opened and my friend stood, still in her pajamas and eating an apple.
"Oh my god, Frankie, it's you! I thought everything was gone, but you're here and where the hell is my family?" I rambled on, but my best friend stared at my with wide eyes.
"Um, I feel bad for asking, but um, who are you?" Frankie asked.
What? "Frankie, it's me, Riley Jackson... Your best friend? I live right next door.."
"No one with the last name Jackson has ever lived next to me, I'm sorry. Are you new to the neighborhood?"
"What? No, Frankie, I live there... I always have. I live with my parents and two sisters. We've gone to school together for the past nine years?.." Frankie continued to stare, confusion present on her face.
What the hell happened last night?

1. AISD and the City of Austin are working together to keep more money in the Austin community for schools by swapping the taxes, which would save the district from having to pay $11 million to the state.

4. I want to go to New Zealand because of the scenery, and I have always wanted to walk on a black sand beach, and New Zealand has one.
5. Personally, I don't like the videos expanding from 15 seconds to one minute. I think Instagram should stick to pictures, with small inserts of videos when it's really necessary. There are other apps that will support longer videos... Most times, the videos slow down my phone and the app while scrolling, so for the videos to get longer, the lag will get longer as well.

Short Answer:

The major candidates left in the races are: for the Republicans, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and for the Democrats, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Overall, I would choose to vote for Bernie Sanders. Even though everyone is turned off by the taxes - which isn't a good thing- , but all of the other candidates have much worse flaws. I really don't want either of the Republicans to win because Cruz, in my opinion, is worse than Trump. He is basically a religious extremist, and that would not go over well with any of our country's beliefs. Trump is awful too; he's sexist, wants to build walls around the country, and banish muslims. Who does that? And as for Hillary, I wouldn't mind if she were president, but to be honest, I don't trust her. I do feel that she would keep the country stable though. Throughout this election, I feel that the country is definitely becoming more divided. These candidates have such different beliefs, and the supporters with them feel so strongly toward what these candidates are saying. There is definitely a separation between the Trump supporters and those who hate Trump... there's no in between. What concerns me most about this election is definitely the Republican party. I don't know what I would do if either of them won the election... I don't feel safe having a sexist, racist, and super rude president. The major topics in this election that are driving the candidates to say what they are saying is taxes, abortion, immigration, the environment, specifically oil, and terrorism policies. To me, the most important topics are terrorism policies and immigration. Trump was saying how he wanted to build a wall around our country to keep illegal immigrants out, which, honestly, is appalling to me. What country, especially the Land of the Free, has a massive WAll around it? None. Also, immigration has been such a big part of our country, and for someone to completely shut it off would be an outrage to many americans. Also, the terrorism situations are very sensitive and a delicate topic, so for candidates (esp Trump and Cruz) not to take them seriously, would risk our entire country.

Three important rules of soccer are that there cannot exceed 11 players on the field at one time, the goalie cannot touch the ball with his/her hands if they are outside of the 18-yd box, and when a foul is committed, a free kick can take place that can either be direct or indirect. Three examples of jargon in soccer are offsides, penalty kicks, and a hat trick. Offsides is a foul where a player of one team is past the last defender on another team when the ball is kicked. Penalty kicks are when a player of one team gets to shoot directly at the goal at a specific location and the goalie of the opposite team gets to stand in goal. This occurs when a foul is made inside the 18-yd box or if the two teams are tied when the game ends. A hat trick is when a single player scores three goals in one game. A soccer cliché is "he worked his socks off", and that means a player worked really hard and gave it their all.
An outstanding player on the Arsenal team is Aaron Ramsey, who scored 13 goals in 27 matches. He was born in Caerphilly, South Wales. He attended Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni college. Aaron James Ramsey has played for the Arsenal FC since July 2008. Ramsey hasn't set any specific records (besides a guiness world record), but he was nominated as Arsenal's toughest teammate.

My Spring Break

My spring break was absolutely incredible! I think the highlight of my break was definitely going to the Troye Sivan concert! I am in love with his music and so hearing him live in Dallas was loads of fun. Before going to the concert, my friend Emily and I decided to go to the massive mall in Dallas. Unfortunately, the traffic was horrendous, so after a while, we had to go to the bathroom... Luckily, we found an italian restaurant nearby, so we stopped there. But, uh, there was kinda a problem... Emily and I couldn't find the door to get into the restaurant... We walked around the building multiple times as this couple watched us from an outside table. Embarrassing. Finallly, we got inside, only to find that the signs for the bathroom doors were only written in french. We hoped so badly that we walked into the right bathroom (Luckily, we did). Let's just say that was an ... interesting experience...
When we got to the venue, the House of Blues, there was a massive line, so despite getting there really early, we found ourselves stuck at the back of the line. After playing (and finishing) four painfully slow 'alphabet' games, my friend Emily and I made it inside! There were already lots of people on the floor, and by the time we got to it, we couldn't see a thing. Lots of people were in the same boat as us, and we started talking to these guys (I have to admit, they were pretty attractive :) Eventually, we all went to the balcony, which was almost empty, so we had really good seats! As soon as the show started, everyone was screaming so loud, including myself, that I doubt anyone could actually hear Troye sing... I got really cool videos (sadly, I imported them to my laptop so I don't have them on my phone anymore) and a few cool pictures. By the time the concert ended, I had lost my voice completely... it was so worth it though.

Skipping to the beginning of my break, before the concert, I had gotten a text from my oldest sister (she's in her third year of college) that she was coming home, and stupidly, I told her that I made cookies, which she was 'really excited to eat'. Whoops. In the short time before she got to Austin, I hurried to make these amazing snicker doodle cookies, and while they were cooking, the light came through the blinds and landed on a single cookie, so naturally, I took a picture of it (It was delicious as well).

In conclusion, my spring break was amazing, and although I did more things and hung out with more people, that would be painfully long to read (and write), so those were some of the things I remembered off the top of my head.

Magazine Cover Review

http://josephsjournalismblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/newspaper-magazine-covers.html

a. Lite Photo by Joey K.
b. I really like how the words framed the picture and the creative picture that was taken. Also there's the fact that the headline topics relate really well to the photo.
c. The only thing that I would recommend to be changed about this cover is the size of the barcode and the price of the magazine (needs to be a lot cheaper).
d. I picked this magazine cover because the photo is absolutely incredible looking. The creative aspect of the cover is definitely present! Also, the way that the words framed the main part of the photo made me choose this photo.
e. Yes there is a barcode and it's appropriately placed. The only thing is that I think it should be downsized a little bit.
f. Yes, I would pick up this magazine in a store because I really like the photo and am curious to see what's inside.
g. I can't tell if this is a portrait or self portrait, but due to the other magazine cover being a self portrait, I can tell that this is a portrait.

Magazine Cover Review

http://emilymjournalismblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/magazine-covers.html

a. Iridescence by Emily Merritt.
b. I really like the photo and how the lights that she's holding up are the center of attention (my eyes are drawn to it immediately). I also love the color scheme and simplicity of the cover.
c. I would recommend making the price and date smaller on the magazine cover, and maybe moving the price down to the location of the barcode.
d. I picked this cover because the simplicity and color scheme was really eye-appealing. I love the topics that she chose as headlines.
e. Yes, there is a barcode and it's appropriately sized and placed.
f. Yes, I would read this newspaper because I love simplicity in magazines and this really gave me that. I also love simple, white text, and this magazine has that.
g. I can tell that this is a self-portrait.

Magazine Peer Review

http://clairesjournalismblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/magazine-covers.html

a. Exposed magazine by Claire Meyer
b. I really like the way Claire made part of the picture colored by the paint brush while everything else is black and white, and I also like how the color scheme flowed throughout the entire cover.
c. There's hardly anything to change about this cover, so the only thing I'd suggest is to size down the barcode.
d. I picked this cover because the editing effects really stood out from the other magazine covers. Just the way the stripe of color was 'painted on' by the paint brush that the subject held up is really eye-appealing. Also, I have heard good things about Claire's work so I wanted to check it out.
e. Yes, there is a bar code, and it might be a little bit big, but it's in the appropriate place.
f. If I saw this magazine, I would definitely want to read it, mainly because the topic really interests me (the art environment and everything relating to art in general).
g. I can automatically tell that it was a portrait.

Other High School Newspapers

1. My favorite newspaper front page is The Tiger Print because the large image really caught my attention. Something about a large, dominant picture on the front page of a newspaper really interests me. I also love the color choices of this front page, with the white text, teal background, and in the picture it's black and white with a splash of pink.
2. Just like my favorite newspaper front page, the cover that actually caught my attention was the same newspaper, the Tiger Print. It's something to do with the color choices and the topic of the leading story. Again, the dominant photo really caught my eye.
3. My favorite headline, the only headline, was "Tipping the Scale: Female students discuss participation in male-dominated classes" because of how relevant the story is to me. I can relate to the story without even reading it. I'm a girl and have experiences of my own that relate to this story topic.
4. There's one story, but it's just the headline.
5. I noticed that in these high school newspaper front covers, most of them have a larger photo that takes up most to all of the page, larger than newspapers around the world. The text is larger, words are minimal, and in my opinion, they are all more unique and diverse from each other.
6. Things that are different about these newspapers is definitely the amount of creativity or diversity of these papers. Some have stuck to the generic page with stories and lots of words with minimal pictures, and others have done the opposite. Another difference is the size of the titles/name of newspaper. Some are just larger than the headlines, while others (especially "Craze" take up nearly the entire front page.
7. These newspapers are definitely different than those around the world. The school newspapers, like explained before, have varying title sizes and larger pictures, while newspapers around the world have more words and stories, along with minimal pictures.

Front Pages of the World

1. My favorite newspaper would have to be the Enterprise Ledger from Alaska because the paper isn't cramped with lots of words and although it talks about politics, which I'm overwhelmed with, the simplicity of the paper is very eye-appealing. I also like the coloring of the paper, which includes blue lines with orange headlines.
2. My favorite headline that interests me from the newspaper would have to be "EHS Cheerleader Hired by UCA" because I think stories about students just like me who excel in what they are good at are very touching and inspirational. This girl was really good at cheerleading, and it shows after she is hired by UCA. I love it.
3. There are a total of 5 front page stories on the Enterprise Ledger.
4. After looking at lots of newspapers, I notice that most to all of the stories contain a large title on the top and a large or powerful picture on the page, typically in the center. The headline associated with that photo is larger than all the other headlines and the colors fit nicely with the coloring of the photo.
5. Things that I've noticed to vary on the front pages of newspapers is the size of the picture, how many pictures are on the front, how big the headlines are, and how many words are on the front page (the amount of stories).

2. 1,090 students will benefit from the one million dollar donation from the couple.
3. The $20 million raised will go towards supporting the "AeroVanc Phase 3 trial and expand the pipeline with other new drugs for serious and life-shortening rare respiratory diseases".
4. I think that out of the four streaming titles, I'd prefer to watch "Before We Go" because it sounds really cute and heartfelt.
5. For the girls UT basketball game, the Baylor Bears beat the UT girls 74-48. The UT boys lost against Kansas Jayhawks 67-37.

Short Answer:
Despite losing some privacy, I do believe that Apple should create a backdoor to information stored on iPhones because if them accessing certain information will keep my country safe, I think that it is the right decision. In a way, I'm kind of split between whether or not I personally like this idea of a backdoor however. Just the idea that someone can access all my information stored on my phone easily, that in a way terrifies me. In the more broad view regarding terrorist attacks, etc., I think that I will be able to bypass the unusual feeling. Of course I wouldn't want anyone to access all of my information if they were to take my phone. If they did do that, what kind of privacy do I really have? I suppose my perspective regarding the backdoor to all my information has left me torn between whether or not I support it.. I do think that national security is a good enough reason to access that kind of information because I believe in protecting our country and keeping as many people safe as we can. If that means losing part of my privacy, I suppose I can get past that for the safety of my country. My parents do check my social media accounts, etc., but it's not a huge deal in my family. My mom isn't constantly checking to see what I post, but she is following me on a few of my accounts, so she can see if she were to open the app (Instagram for example). She has checked my phone's text messages a few times -- which annoyed me as I was having a conversation with my friends and felt it was unnecessary. I do believe that parents should check some social media for their kids every once and a while, just to make sure the kid isn't being disrespectful or inappropriate online. This doesn't mean that the parent should be strict about it, however. I feel that some parents restrict so much of what the kids do, that when they go online, they don't have much to show of their personality, etc. In general, I believe that an exposure to technology comes at different ages. Watching movies or playing a few apps for a short period of time can start at age 6 or so, but the time spent online would be restricted to only certain occasions. I think that an appropriate age to get a phone is around middle school, so age 12. I mostly think this age just because of safety reasons and the child is growing up and wants to communicate.

CE 4.4

1. Apple is trying to keep their encryption codes on their phones because they claim it's more privacy to the consumer, and if that code is taken away, it could be misused by the wrong people.
2. Carnitine is the food supplement that might help autistic kids.
3. Walmart is saying that the Amazon/online shopping is causing their earnings to drop.
4. Some schools were appealing to the UIL regarding sports district alignment because they wanted to ease the travel hardship.
5. Some of the popular VR devices that are coming to the market soon are the Oculus Rift and Taiwan-based HTC.

Short Answer:

From this Q&A, I learned from the issue with the supreme court is regarding the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. There is the issue of whether or not Obama should elect a new justice or leave that decision up to the new president, so Scalia's death is causing a big controversy.Yes, I do think that there should be pressure put on the congress to deal with the deadlock problem because without a justice to approve or deny the case, or without any set decision is faulty in ways that makes the cases require new rearguments, which in my opinion, seems like a hassle that can be avoided if the congress deals with the issue. No, before this article and Q&A, I was not aware of the issue in general, but I do think that the president, Obama, should elect a new justice instead of the next president at the end of the year. I think this because I feel that Obama is the most familiar with the situation than the future president, and therefore could make a better decision and make one thats reasonable, smart, and the right decision.

Lone Star Dispatch Issue #4

Front Page - SL Parade on March 10
The Student Leadership class is planning a No Place for Hate parade on March 10th to promote anti-bullying. After working to get the parade idea approved, the class hopes to gather as many Bowie students as they can to participate in the parade and to fight discrimination towards bullying. This is a new idea that will hopefully help to gain awareness towards the situation.

Where - on the Bowie campus

Quoted:
Aleka Neptune
Vicki Benson
Patricia Maney

In my opinion, the strongest quote is from Benson when she says "I love being able to put together something that hasn't been done before... I really love a challenge, and this project definitely has its challenges."

No, the lead sentence doesn't make me want to keep reading. Although the event sounds cool, the topic sentence just doesn't show that.

End was a quote.

News - Freshman Katelyn Dill takes home grand champion award

How - they composed their own projects and traveled to the schools to judge

Quoted:
Alonna Beatty
Cardenas (no first name given)
Gause (no first name given)
Katelyn Dill

In my opinion, the best quote is from Gause: "There was pressure to continue doing it since I did it from my freshman year to my junior year. It's my last year here so that was also some pressure as well."

No, the lead was confusing when I initially read it. Also, there are so many grammatical and fluency issues with this story that I didn't enjoy reading it. Hardly any first names were mentioned, so that was confusing, and there were punctuation errors all over the place.

End was a quote.

Sports - Ray is an All-American nominee
This sports story is about a star player at Bowie, Kianna Ray getting the Ronald McDonalds All American Athlete award. Ray was one of the few girls nominated for this award, and her teammates shared how Ray made an impact on the team. This also talks about Ray's upcoming game and how much pressure that will be.

Who - Kianna Ray
What - was awarded one of the Ronald McDonald All American Athlete award
When - January 6
Where - Bowie High School
Why - Ray showed exceptional qualities that made her stand out on the court
How - spectators were going to the basketball games and nominated Ray

Quoted:
Kianna Ray
Alyssa Kuykendall
Foradory (no first name given)

In my opinion, the best quote is from Kuykendall when she says: "If I could describe Kianna in one word it would be genuine...No matter how much pressure is put on her, she remains humble and kind. She will do whatever it takes to accomplish her ambitions and goals, all the while staying true to yourself."

Yes, the lead was pretty interesting, I want to keep reading.

End was a quote

Yes, the lead made me want to keep reading.

Glenewinkel, the author of this story, explains her point of view on the situation and why she watches the show. She backs up her ideas with percentage facts and connects with the reader (myself).

Who - Steven Avery

end is a statement/question.

Magazines Part II

Early Magazine Covers - The early magazine covers tended to contain minimal descriptive words and  didn't give any insight to what the magazine contained. In fact, the magazine covers were typically modeled after book covers. Since these magazine covers didn't look hardly like the covers we have today, there were minimal pictures, possibly containing one in the middle of the page.

The Poster Cover - The poster cover is an oversized magazine cover that contains minimal text on the front page and leaves a separation between the logo and the photo/illustration. Since the photo is so large, not many words are necessary and the photo is so prominent that even the logo is dwarfed by the picture.

Pictures Married to Type - In this type of magazine cover, the photo is contains a new form of a photo that shows more of the subject by introducing new 'turned' poses and full body pictures. To frame the subject's face, cover lines were used on all sides of the person in a border-like visual. A common feature was to overlap the title/logo with the picture.

In a Forest of Words - In this type of magazine cover, the words in a way "take over" the cover. The photograph is no longer in the foreground, which causes an overlap of the text on the photo. Because of the amount of text on the cover, lots of information is shown that can distract or attract the viewer.

My Favorite Cover

Harper's Bazaar, March 2014, Lady Gaga
"Eyes closed, surrounded by a cut-out Carolina Herrera neckpiece, Lady Gaga looks like she's ready to explode. Photographed by Terry Richardson, what compels about the cover is both the graphics and the rare stillness of a superstar. Here, cut-out means a knockout."
This portrait is absolutely stunning. Lady Gaga seems posed, yet completely relaxed at the same time. The way the photo is layered adds a new dimension to the photo that really interests me as a viewer. I also love how Gaga is in a way framed by the cut-out Carolina Herrera neckpiece and it brings the attention to Gaga as the main subject. Speaking of the neckpiece, this piece is truly remarkable. The design is so intricate and detailed, yet somehow it's a subtle add to the cover as a whole. However, without this addition, the photo would seem plain and lacking the creative touch that has been produced from Bazaar magazines.

Magazine Tips

When I design my magazine cover, I should ...
1. Make the cover easy and fast to read, meaning that I shouldn't have too much text to too much clutter.
2. Make the cover worth the reader's time; why is this important to the viewer?
3. Make the cover appealing to the viewers.
4. Design the cover to pull the reader's curiosity in; make a cover that makes the reader want to read the magazine.
5. The brand needs to be familiar to recognize from issue to issue.

Prompt Shoot #2

Cold

Electric

Purple

CE 4.3

1. The five things you should know about the Zika virus is that Zika in in Travis County, it's linked to birth defects, it's been found active in saliva and urine, pregnant women are at risk, and there's no vaccine for the Zika virus.
2. Ft. Hood is promoting renewable energy by building a massive solar wind project. They are also saying that the renewable energy increases energy security and mitigates the rising energy costs.
3. Three of the top jobs that don't require a degree are a plumber, electrician, and a construction and building inspector.
4. The Denver Broncos won 24-10.
5. The most interesting story (besides the weird miley cyrus story which caught my eye initially) would be the #nofilter story.

Short answer:
My favorite photo on these pages is the picture "Here comes the snow" because there's something about the falling snow on the kids that is just peaceful, yet frigid. Maybe it's because I don't see snow very often, so seeing this makes me really happy. I just really like the pops of color against the white snow; it's a really cool effect. The photo that has the most going on is the one titled "flight of the angel" because there are lots and lots of people at the bottom of this frame with the main subject present. Despite the amount of black on these peoples' clothes, I feel as if there's a lot of color encompassing this photo. In my opinion, the most boring picture is "counted by hand" because there's no subject present (besides her hands) and the idea of someone counting ballots is elongating and boring. Although weird, I think that the photo with the most interesting subject is the "shadow dancing" picture. I mean, a man is holding up a groundhog; that's a lot more interesting than a posed smile picture of a group of people or a pretty landscape photo.

Portraits and Self Portraits

Tips:
1.  Experiment with Lighting
Another element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that you light them. There are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to using light in portraits.
Side-lighting can create mood, backlighting and silhouetting your subject to hide their features can be powerful.
2.

Move Your Subject Out of their Comfort Zone

I was chatting with a photographer recently who told me about a corporate portrait shoot that he had done with a business man at his home. They’d taken a lot of head and shoulder shots, shots at his desk, shots in front of framed degrees and other ‘corporate’ type images. They had all turned out fairly standard – but there was nothing that really stood out from the crowd.
The photographer and the subject agreed that there were plenty of useable shots but they wanted to create something ‘special’ and out of the box. The photographer suggested they try some ‘jumping’ shots. The subject was a little hesitant at first but stepped out into the uncomfortable zone and dressed in his suit and tie started jumping!
The shots were amazing, surprising and quite funny. The shoot culminated with the subject jumping in his pool for one last image!
While this might all sound a little ‘silly’ the shots ended up being featured in a magazine spread about the subject. It was the series of out of the box images that convinced the magazine he was someone that they’d want to feature.
3.

Obscure Part of your Subject

A variation on the idea of zooming in on one part of the body is to obscure parts of your portrait subject’s face or body. You can do this with clothing, objects, their hands or just by framing part of them out of the image.
Doing this means that you leave a little to the imagination of the image’s viewer but also focus their attention on parts of your subject that you want them to be focused upon.

Environmental Portrait
In this environmental portrait, I really like how the sense of movement is portrayed with the lasso. This also creates a sense of depth because the circle of the lasso is closer to the camera than the boy throwing it. Overall, just the background and motion make this picture truly amazing.

Photography Self Portrait
I don't know what it is about the split frame with water and air, but I think it creates a really cool effect on the picture. The wave/water line creates movement, and the girl has something on her that shows a story. This makes me as the viewer curious to hear the story behind the picture.
Casual Portrait
I really like this picture and how the car window frames the girl's body/face. All of the other pictures were plain and average, but this one stood out in the expression of the woman and the story she has. The thing I like most is the framing though. :)

1. The characteristics of an environmental picture is using the environment around them to create a more powerful image. Including the environment in the background causes the photo to have more depth and in a way, personality of the subject.
2. When I think of a casual picture, I imagine a standard, posed picture of the person's face. An environmental picture differs from that because more elements are added to the frame that is more than just a face.
3. To get a good self portrait, use a tripod and/or timer to capture the image. Another tip is to use different compositions and incorporate a mirror into the frame so you don't have to use a timer or tripod. You can also include personality into the photos by including items and symbols.
4. For my portrait and self portrait, my plan is to have a photoshoot with a couple of my friends where we will get a bunch of balloons and maybe umbrellas and other cute and happy things. My idea is that the pictures will be really happy and colorful, because that represents my personality most of the time. Because balloons are involved and I don't want them to blow away, I'll most likely shoot inside, maybe in my bedroom because I have a huge mirror that would look really cool in the frame.
